Netflix Anime Adaptation Sparks Onimusha Revival Speculation

Musashi Miyamoto, the Legendary Samurai, Set to Lead Onimusha Anime Continuation Amidst Sengoku Chaos

Onimusha, a highly successful game franchise, uniquely blended action-adventure elements from classic Resident Evil with a supernatural Sengoku-era backdrop. Following four main game titles and a few spin-offs, the series went dormant, only receiving remaster releases. However, Netflix recently surprised fans with an anime trailer set in the game's universe, fueling speculation about its potential revival.

Musashi Miyamoto, the Sacred Swordsman, Embarks on an Epic Journey in Onimusha Anime Trailer

In the trailer, Musashi Miyamoto rescues a young girl amidst a massacre and vows to protect her. Simultaneously, he is entrusted with a mysterious box, under strict instructions to wait 33 days before opening it. Together, they venture into the chaos of the Sengoku era, encountering the enigmatic Genma creatures.

Musashi is later chosen by the Oni clan to become a demon slayer, and the mysterious box contains the Oni Gauntlet, designed to absorb the souls of defeated Genma. The broader narrative of the Onimusha world revolves around the conflict between two extraordinary supernatural races, the Oni (Orcs) and the Genma (Demons). The Genma seek to rise and conquer the human realm amidst the chaos of war, while the Oni thwart their efforts by selecting brave samurai and empowering them with the Oni Gauntlet. This remarkable artifact enables its wielder to absorb the souls of defeated Genma, thereby enhancing their strength, ultimately allowing even a human, initially weaker than Genma, to vanquish them.

There are four main characters from the respective four game installments who have received the Oni Gauntlet, including Samanosuke Akechi, the grandson of Mitsuhide Akechi; Jubei Yagyu, a renowned swordsman from the prestigious Yagyu clan; Jaques Blanc, a former 20th-century French police officer; and Hideyashu Yuki, the son of Ieyasu Tokugawa. Musashi Miyamoto, Japan's most famous swordsman, will be the fifth character to wield the Oni Gauntlet.

The Onimusha series will premiere on Netflix starting November 2nd. This is an exciting gift for long-time fans, as it explores a brand-new storyline and character arc, rather than retelling familiar tales from the past.
